At its I/O Conference, Google announced that the company has been working on standalone VR headset that will support inside-out tracking. Google is creating reference design for the VR with help from Qualcomm, and it’s also working with HTC and Lenovo for standalone headsets.
The new Daydream VR headset would work without a phone, a PC, or any kind of cable. It would be a self-contained machine that can be used just by picking it up and putting it on.
There’s no release date or price announced for the headsets, but the sources state that Google has developed a prototype and that Lenovo and HTC will release commercial versions “in the coming months.”
